The Star Ferry is undoubtedly one of Hong Kong’s most iconic modes of transport and a permanent fixture in Victoria Harbour. Of course, I highly recommend it as one of your must-dos if you ever visit this unique city. With its stunning views of the harbor, affordable fares, and historical significance, there is no better way to explore and experience the dynamic atmosphere of Hong Kong, its people, and its summer breeze. The Star Ferry is a mode of transport that holds a special place in my heart. Read this article to find out about the ferry routes, prices, and a bit of its history.
1 Star Ferry Maps and Routes
The Ferry operates two main routes from Tsim Sha Tsui: the first to Central and the second to Wan Chai. It’s actually the cheapest way to cross Victoria Harbour to the Hong Kong Island side. What’s the cherry on top is the amazing panoramic views of the iconic harbour. Some say the New York skyline is impressive, but I’d argue that Hong Kong’s skyline surpassed that of any other major city decades ago. I might be biased, of course! Don’t agree? That’s fine! Leave a comment below and let me know which metropolitan skyline is your favourite in the world!
Tsim Sha Tsui – Central Route – Takes about 12 Minutes to complete
Tsim Sha Tsui – Wan Chai Route – Takes about 10 minutes to complete
2 Best Time to Take the Star Ferry
In fact, the ferry service is so affordable that you can take it multiple times a day without significantly impacting your expenses. The Star Ferry offers spectacular views at any time of the day, but my favorite time to take it is close to sunset! If you’re traveling from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central or Wan Chai, sit on the right-hand side. However, if you’re going from Central or Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui, then take a seat on the left to enjoy unobstructed sunset views!

4 Awesome 60-Minute Ferry Tours around Victoria Harbour
The World Star Water Tour is a fantastic new addition for tourists. It offers an open upper deck where you can wander and enjoy mesmerizing views of the city. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to take photos and selfies during this ferry trip. Unlike the regular ferry rides between Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, or Wan Chai, this ferry experience is thoughtfully designed with visitors in mind. You won’t need to rush through your experience. If you have an hour to spare and want to relax, this might be the perfect way to do so!
5 Historical Significance of the Hong Kong Star Ferry
Since 1888, the Star Ferry has offered passenger services across Victoria Harbour, connecting Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Starting from a small wooden boat, the service has expanded to become one of the most popular modes of transportation in Hong Kong, with over 65 million passengers taking the ferry every year.
6 Take a selfie at the iconic Former KCR Clock Tower!
When you arrive at the Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier, you won’t miss the age-old Former KCR Clock Tower of Hong Kong. Built in 1915, this iconic masterpiece has endured the test of time. You can hear the bell tower chime of this beauty every hour until midnight.
7 Conclusion
Whether you’re visiting Hong Kong for a week, a month, or just a day, you absolutely must not miss the Star Ferry. It’s not only conveniently located near Hong Kong’s famous landmarks and districts but is also a landmark in its own right. In recent years, the Star Ferry company has faced financial challenges due to its low prices, but it’s our responsibility to preserve this piece of history by taking a ferry trip at a minimal cost.
