Stepping onto the grounds of the main battery area, you’re enveloped by the echoes of history. The construction of the battery, initiated in 1901 and concluded in 1905, was driven by the British Military’s vision to bolster the western harbour’s defences.
However, financial considerations and plans for another battery on Mt. Davis prompted the removal of guns from Pinewood Battery, rendering it obsolete in 1913.
In 1930, the battery experienced a resurgence in its role within the evolving landscape of warfare, transforming into an anti-aircraft battery. Positioned atop a strategic elevation of 307 meters (1,009 feet), its significance during the Battle of Hong Kong (8-25 December 1941) cannot be overstated.
On the morning of December 8, 1941, approximately 34 Japanese fighter planes and bombers launched an attack on Kat Tak aerodrome and the British barracks at Sham Shui Po. Following this assault, Japanese forces crossed into the New Territories.
The defending garrison faced insurmountable odds, with a significant numerical and firepower disadvantage (13,500 defenders against 40,000 invaders). The Japanese Army assumed control of Kowloon after a night-time assault on the Shing Mun Redoubt and initiated shelling of Hong Kong Island’s defences as early as December 13.
Over the subsequent days, a substantial portion of the island’s defences, especially those in the northeastern region, sustained significant damage or destruction. On the evening of December 18, Japanese forces landed on the island, and after seven days of fierce combat, the garrison surrendered on the afternoon of December 25.
During the conflict in the New Territories and Kowloon, Pinewood Battery played a crucial role as part of the island’s anti-aircraft defences, effectively repelling air attacks on both the island’s installations and vessels in Victoria Harbour.
Nevertheless, the island’s small size and challenging terrain posed limitations for the anti-aircraft defences. The Royal Artillery commander observed that the Sperry Predicator’s tracking speed was inadequate for intercepting enemy aircraft, which often swiftly passed over Hong Kong Island and disappeared behind hills.
On December 15, the battery came under heavy artillery fire from the Japanese 14th Independent Heavy Field Artillery Regiment based at Ho Man Tin, leading the gunners to abandon their position.
Yet, the battle left its scars, with the battery enduring heavy bombardment by Japanese artillery fire.
Today, the Pinewood Battery stands as a poignant reminder of Hong Kong’s military past. Amidst the serene landscapes of Lung Fu Shan Country Park, the battery’s remnants remain remarkably preserved.
The gun battery, magazine, command post, and observation post bear witness to their storied history. A heritage trail thoughtfully winds around the battery, offering visitors an immersive tour of its legacy.
